With more than 1,400 employees across 36 different trades, we ensure smooth operations, maintain over 40,000 medical devices and keep a highly complex hospital infrastructure running – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Apprenticeship training at VKMB covers a range of technical and skilled trades. Below is an overview of the individual apprenticeship professions and their key responsibilities.

Mechatronics
As a mechatronics technician, you assemble individual components into complex systems and install pneumatic, hydraulic and electronic control systems. You also carry out inspections and repairs and ensure that technical systems operate reliably.

Metal Technology
In metal technology, you process sheet metal or metal components into parts for machines or manufacture door elements, cladding and housings from them. You operate machinery as well as CNC systems and carry out repairs and maintenance – either in the workshop or directly on technical installations at the University Hospital Vienna (AKH Wien).

Electrical engineering
As an electrical engineering apprentice, you work with electrical, control and building services technology. You are responsible for installing and operating lighting and power supply systems, security and communication systems, and for troubleshooting faults to ensure that everything functions smoothly within the hospital.

Installation and building technology
In the installation and building technology apprenticeship, you assemble, maintain and repair systems for heating, water and gas supply as well as ventilation systems. You lay pipelines, manufacture components, adjust measuring and control devices, and ensure that supply systems remain safe and operational.

Carpentry
As a carpentry apprentice, you manufacture furniture, windows, doors and other components from materials such as wood, chipboard or acrylic mineral stone according to plans. You assemble and adjust fittings, carry out repairs, and complete larger projects either in the workshop or directly on site.

Painting and coating technology
In this field, you protect and enhance various surfaces such as plaster, wood, concrete, metal or plastic using paints and coatings. You prepare surfaces, calculate material requirements, apply coatings, and take care of preparatory and finishing work on construction sites.

Floor laying
As a floor layer, you install various floor coverings such as linoleum, rubber or laminate in offices and public areas. You prepare the subfloor, cut materials to size, glue or coat them, and carry out the work directly on site at construction projects.

Commercial services
In the commercial area, you will take on office, administrative and organisational tasks. During your training, you will acquire fundamental business and legal knowledge as well as proficiency in using modern office software. Depending on your area of focus, you may later work in procurement, finance or project management.
